26/05/2017: Benchmark sign joint venture agreement with SalMar ASA

Benchmark logo: image courtesy of Benchmark Holdings PLC
Benchmark, the aquaculture biotechnology and food chain sustainability business, announces that group performance for the six months to 31 March 2017 was broadly in line with the board's expectations.

Highlights of the first year include:

  • Benchmark signed a joint venture agreement with SalMar ASA, through which it will provide genetics, health and knowledge services to the world's third largest salmon producer. This is an important acknowledgement of Benchmark's technology, and exemplifies its strategy to provide a suite of technology solutions to the aquaculture industry.
  • Construction of the group's new salmon egg production facility in Norway continued on schedule. This important development will underpin Benchmark breeding and genetics' market leading position in the sector.
  • Good progress was made in advanced animal nutrition towards the goal of delivering 100 percent live replacement for feeding juvenile shrimp, a key to unlocking future growth potential for the industry.
  • As anticipated, the Animal Health division saw significantly lower demand for Salmosan in Norway due to an industry focus of new solutions to the significant sea lice challenge.
  • Good progress was made towards the commercial field trials launch of a ground-breaking sea lice treatment. Significant revenues from this product are anticipated in H2 and beyond, which are projected to support the achievements of the board's expectations for FY 2017 following the challenging first half for Salmosan.
  • The new state of the art vaccine manufacturing facility in Braintree is being commissioned and first commercial batches are expected in H2.
In the shrimp sector, disease challenge coupled with low market prices resulted in delayed sector investment and lower growth rates in the first half year. The group has proceeded cautiously with new investments, whilst continuing to progress core infrastructure projects which support long term growth.

The group is seeking to grow sales and market share in developing markets, including China, for its breeding and genetics and advanced animal nutrition divisions, and is progressing towards establishing strategic relationships in those regions. Further progress has been made with the development of the group wide customer account management programme, which will promote the full benefit of Benchmark's integrated technology solutions in aquaculture.

The long term drivers of growth in the Company's sectors, which include the growing global demand for aquaculture products and an ever increasing pressure to limit the use of antibiotics in the food chain, remain strong, with increasing momentum and interest in the aquaculture market. The company continues to focus on delivery of its strategy to deploy leading technologies drawn from across the group, through established distribution channels, into long-term growth markets.

Benchmark expects to announce its interim results for the six months to March 31, 2017 during the week commencing June 26, 2017.

Commenting on trading, Benchmark's Chief Executive Officer, Malcolm Pye, remarked, "The agreement with SalMar is an example of the value we can deliver to our customers by aggregating leading technologies to provide integrated solutions to the issues faced by the food production industry. There are a number of technologies in the later stages of development that we are particularly excited about, and we look forward to delivering these, through our distribution networks, including into the significant Asian and Latin American shrimp and tilapia markets."

25/05/2017: ILDEX Indonesia 2017

Photo provided by ILDEX Indonesia team
Internationalising the livestock market in one of the fastest growing countries in Asia.

Indonesia is considered as the largest economy in Southeast Asia. The middle class are set to become a prominent force in the country. This is due not only to their huge demographic, but also to their strong income growth prospects.

Investors will find in Indonesia the ideal balance between booming demand for livestock products and an abundance of agricultural and natural resources. As Southeast Asia's largest country (and the world's fourth most populous at about 250 million people),

Indonesia has witnessed a major boom in demand for livestock products such as red meat, milk, eggs and beef and cattle. Of which the Indonesian Ministry of Agriculture is more focused on strengthening at the moment.

The Indonesian Minister of Agriculture commented, "This effort is the government's commitment in pursuing self sufficiency of cattle production, targeted by Indonesian President Joko Widodo, to be reached in 2026. This effort is also to realise an independent country in terms of the fulfilment of livestock products, and at the same time, to improve the welfare of farmers."

The Minister of Trade also remarked that Indonesia should be self-sufficient on livestock and be able to export these products. He said, "The welfare of farmers is rising, and the poverty rate is decreasing. That is the governments target."

VNU Exhibitions Asia Pacific and Federasi Masyarakat Perunggasan Indonesia together announced investment platform entitled, 'ILDEX Indonesia 2017'.

25/05/2017: Dinnissen is developing by a mix of innovations

Dinnissen has broadened the deployability of its mixers, thanks to a mix of innovations

The mixers have been further improved in several areas, and, moreover, they explicitly consider the role of the mixer in the overall operation. That is why the validation of mixing processes have now been added to their service.

The improved D-Topline mixer is easy to clean
Dinnissen Process Technology is actively engaged in the development and manufacture of process equipment such as grinding mills, mixers, bulk bag filling systems and turnkey projects for the food industry, animal feed industry, pharmaceuticals and chemicals. The company is a specialist in prudent, hygienic and rapid mixing of powders, pellets and granules.

They never shirk challenges such as achieving higher capacities, improving homogeneous mixing of micro-components, mixing poor flowing materials or processing high percentages of liquid. On the contrary; Dinnissen are constantly looking for applications that are a trigger for the development of even better mixers.

Improved D-Topline
This desire for constant innovation has recently led to the introduction of the 'Improved D-Topline', a model based on the familiar Pegasus double-axle paddle mixer. The geometry of the installation is modified in such a way that the upper sides of the mixing chamber lean in towards each other, resulting in a drop shape.

The negative angle of inclination in the upper side of the mixing chamber reduces the risk of product adhesion. In addition, the 'Improved D-Topline "can be equipped with an additional hatch ('front hedge') on the front.

This feature makes it much easier to inspect or clean the mixer. In some cases, thanks to this hatch, a version can be offered where the paddle axle assembly can be driven entirely from the mixing chamber. Furthermore, the ‘Improved D-Topline’ is provided with a divisible shaft seal, allowing the installation to be CIP-cleanable.

High-shear mixer
Dinnissen is at an advanced stage of optimising high-shear applications in the mixing process, which are also based on the Pegasus mixing principle. There are applications in which powders require a greater frictional force in order to obtain a homogeneous product. A change in the paddle configuration ensures that the new high shear process applies the necessary energy to the product, but without sacrificing the typical advantages of the Pegasus mixer.

Explosion-proof mixer
Yet another development is the introduction of an explosion-proof mixer (Atex-zone 20 internal), suitable for processing materials in which the Kst- and LEL-values are within a fixed range. This mixer was subject to a risk assessment and received a type approval for the entire Pegasus mixer range from an independent Notified Body.

An example of an 'All in One' concept
‘All in one’ concept
The 'All in one' concept is Dinnissen’s response to the demand for fully integrated process lines. An example is the mixing line which has recently been shipped to a customer in the United States. This consists of a skid comprising a docking system for vessels which can be deposited into the mixer dust-free, which can then move the mixer up and down to mix and fill the same vessel again.

The great advantage of the 'All in one' concept is that the various components are perfectly matched to each other. This means that a consistently high-quality product can be guaranteed. There is no segregation of the product, and moreover the process is completely dust-free and explosion-proof.

Smart concept

Dinnissen is becoming increasingly involved in the concept stage with their customers. This lies in the fact that the company not only acts as a process specialist but also as a solution provider. Nowadays, processes are developed using 3D modelling, simulations and time analysis.

Thanks to VR support (Virtual Reality), the customer can visualise the design of a process and have an idea of the accessibility and possibilities of systems and components at a much earlier stage. One of the accomplishments of Pegasus mixers is that they are able to mix in concentrations as low as 0.1%. This offers the possibility of removing a premix-step, thereby simplifying the process and gaining the benefits of less handling and energy consumption.

Validation
The increasing interest in the role of the mixer in the overall production process translates into the need for Dinnissen’s customers to have the mixer validated. A validation makes it possible to determine which set of parameters will result in the raw materials being homogeneously mixed to produce an end product of the required quality.

Thus, making it possible to reproduce the mixing processes. Dinnissen is also interested in this validation data, as it will allow them to further optimise their mixers. For that reason, Dinnissen has now added a validation of its mixing processes, which may, if required, be undertaken by an independent agency.

24/05/2017: Fishmeal … or beyond

Sustaining fishmeal in the modern aquaculture market

A special report published this month by Rabobank’s RaboResearch Food & Agribusiness team by Matthew Muller, International Aquafeed magazine

Fishmeal’s increasing scarcity over recent years has led to the rise in the production of alternative protein ingredients being sourced to keep up with aquaculture’s continuing demand for increased production, says a major report on major report on fishmeal newly-released by RaboResearch Food & Agribusiness compiled by Gorjan Nikolik and Beyhan de Jong.

“With now one good season in Peru behind us and another good season on the way, supply is good and prices have stabilised at a relatively lower level.
“With scarcity of fishmeal and fish oil and high prices, many projects for alternative meals and oils have been stated worldwide. Many are in the pre-profit start-up phase,” say the authors.

“We combine these two observations to make the conclusion that the next few years will be decisive for the rising alternatives producers. Some will emerge and achieve scale, which may in the medium-term further erode prices or at least prevent prices from rising again to what they had been.

“This means all the others will need to find niche markets for their products,” they add.
Therefore, a need for solid growth strategies has presented itself, which companies are keen to exploit in order to remain profitable and competitive. It is prudent to take a look at some of the economic factors of supply and demand that surround the issue of fishmeal.

23/05/2017: Omega 3 innovation

Evonik and DSM recently announced to establish a joint venture for omega-3 fatty acid products from natural marine algae for animal nutrition. This breakthrough innovation will, for the first time, enable the production of omega-3 fatty acids for animal nutrition without using fish oil from wild caught fish, a finite resource.

International Aquafeed Magazine caught up with Dr Christoph Kobler from Evonik Nutrition & Care GmbH and Dr David Nickell from DSM Nutritional Products Ltd to find out more about this ground breaking idea.

Christoph Kobler is Head of Product Line Sustainable Healthy Nutrition at Evonik Nutrition & Care GmbH. He holds a PhD in Chemistry from University of Stuttgart.
David Nickell is Vice President for Global Marketing & Business Development, Animal Nutrition and Health at DSM Nutritional Products Ltd. He received a PhD in Aquaculture from University of Stirling.

Can you give the readers an overview of what your breakthrough is?

Kobler: We are the first to offer a liquid, non fish-based alternative source of long chain omega-3-fatty acids. By the help of natural marine algae, we produce an algal oil that contains a natural balance of both essential omega-3-fatty acids EPA and DHA – a true market first. Also, the exceptionally high concentration of active ingredients at greater than 50 percent, increases the flexibility in feed formulation.

Nickell: Furthermore, our new algal oil can be applied in feed production in the same way as fish oil. That means feed and pet food producers can easily introduce it in the process. To meet the increasing demand for omega-3-fatty acids in animal nutrition, we will manufacture at an industrial scale. The initial annual production capacity will meet roughly 15 percent of the total current annual demand for EPA and DHA by the salmon aquaculture industry.

What prompted the joint venture?

Nickell: The success was only possible thanks to the complementary competencies that both of our two companies bring to the collaboration. DSM has expertise in the cultivation of marine organisms including algae whilst Evonik’s focus has been on developing industrial biotechnology processes and operating at large-scales. Our teamwork across companies, countries, and cultures is fantastic and we consider our joint venture the perfect way of collaborating.

22/05/2017: InfiNet Wireless provides super-fast over-water transmission for Regal Springs fish farms

The solution reduced human intervention, improving employee productivity

InfiNet Wireless, the global leader in fixed broadband wireless connectivity, has provided a cost-effective solution to enable the transmission of voice, data and video surveillance footage across all Regal Springs production centres.

Regal Springs is the number one producer of all-natural tilapia, which it grows in rural farms across Mexico, Honduras and Indonesia, in large floating pens to avoid health risks which wild fish can sometimes experience. Due to the vast geographic spread of its facilities, Regal Springs approached INXITE, InfiNet's partner in Mexico specialising in wireless communications and infrastructure solutions, to help provide a more flexible and reliable wireless backhaul network that enables the simultaneous transmission of voice, data and video streams between all its production centres.

INXITE designed the network for optimum performance across Regal Springs' challenging landscape and environment, using the InfiNet Wireless portfolio of solutions that could withstand the harshest climates and be fully reliable even across long distances. The InfiLINK XG was ultimately selected to maximise its best-in-class data rates, speeds and low latency, and was carefully grounded to withstand frequent atmospheric discharges associated with lighting strikes.

“Before the InfiNet Wireless implementation, we had to depend on low cost wireless technologies that did not provide the required performance for us to be able to maintain the high-quality standards our operation needed every day,” said Humberto Villalobos, IT Manager at Regal Springs Mexico. “We are very satisfied with the InfiNet high-speed connectivity deployed throughout the water reservoirs that support our different applications and interconnectivity with our processing plants on the other side of the mountains, all in real time.”

The solution that was ultimately deployed consisted of a combination of both Point to Point (PTP) and Point to Multipoint (PTMP) wireless products. The PTP links were based on the InfiLINK XG product range and are today used to create communication between the main production centres – the administration office on the main land and the fish farms. The PTMP links connected each area and department inside the production centres, enabling Regal Springs to quickly and easily scale the network for its future needs. As all the farms are situated on open water, InfiNet Wireless proved to be the best available low-power consumption solution in the marketplace since it can easily operate via the only available source of electrical power, solar energy.

“Regal Springs needed a solution that was both flexible in terms of geographical coverage and one that improved company productivity, as well as deliver error-free data packets across all production centres,” said Carlos de la Madrid, LATAM Director at InfiNet Wireless. “The solution provided by InfiNet Wireless, along with significantly reduced operational costs when compared to the previous platform, allowed Regal Fish Farms to improve the productivity of its employees and assets, and their valuable time is no longer spent on manual tasks and interventions.”

Regal Springs can now focus entirely on its core business of farming fish in the knowledge that it has put in place a reliable and scalable wireless infrastructure that supports all its needs for voice, data and video transmissions across the wide geographic expanse of all its rural facilities.

22/05/2017: Pangasius farm Vam Nao 2 achieves ASC certification

Vam Nao 2 has achieved certification against the ASC pangasius standard for responsible aquaculture after assessment by independent certifier Bureau Veritas. The farm is based in Vietnam's An Giang Provence and supplies pangasius to ASC certified Vinh Hoan Corporation as part of their vertically integrated supply chain.

Vam Nao 2 is run by Mr. Nguyen Van Nhan, who started cage farming on the Mekong delta in 1990. Mr. Nguyen started farming pangasius in land based ponds in 2000, the same year he began to cultivate pangasius for Vinh Hoan. He has now joined their long term contract farming program, where he continues to farm fish for them. Mr. Nguyen attributes the success of the farm to working closely with Vinh Hoan from the beginning and to the way the farm is run, with all the employees working as a close team, caring for the environment and the local community together.

Fish Feeding
"A lot has changed over the past decades since I began farming pangasius.  We have tirelessly improved the farming techniques and practices from day to day, year to year through learning from our experience and market demand," said Nguyen Van Nhan. "I share Vinh Hoan's vision for sustainability, and I also have an understanding of their market which demands international certification."

"We are pleased to welcome Vam Nao 2 to the ASC programme," said Esther Luiten, Commercial Director for the ASC. "Farmers such as Mr. Nguyen and his team are to be applauded for their commitment to operating to best practises, as part of a transparent and robust certification scheme. Because ASC certified farms undergo assessment by a qualified, independent auditor and publicly report how they produce pangasius, consumers can have confidence they can readily find product raised in a way that cares for the ecosystem- with strict limits on water usage, discharge and no use of toxins-from farms that respect and support the communities where they are sited."
