EuroTier blog: Micro-algae on show

Growing micro-algae at the show demonstrates its future importance in feed.

Inserting algae into an indoor micro-algae growing unit, provided by the German company IGV BioTech, proceeds the opening of the four-day 'Fish in Focus' forum at the EuroTier Aquaculture Advisory Centre, which is just opposite International Aquafeed's stand in Hall 23.

EuroTier takes place every second year in Hanover, Germany, and this year has attracted over 2,400 exhibitors and runs through until Friday.

Dr Birgit Schmidet-Puckhaber, who is EuroTier's project manager for aquaculture, introduced Holger Ortel, president of the German Fish Farmer's Association based in Hamburg, to formally launch the growing chambers prior to the opening presentations at Forum Aquaculture 2012.

The micro-algae introduced into the chambers and grown at the fair for four days is Chlorella, which is a green species that can be produced under controlled conditions in both open and closed systems using defined nutrient solutions. It has a crude protein content in dry matter form of 41 percent.
