AQUA 2012: Animal proteins cleared for use in aqua feeds in EU

Geert van der Velden of Sonac left discusses animal protein reintroduction into aquafeeds
There was a happy buzz around the Sonac exhibition stand at Aqua 2012 as company representatives explained to conference delegates that some animal proteins had been cleared for use in aqua feeds from June 1, 2013.

While member states voted for the reintroduction of non-ruminant processed animal proteins (PAPs) in aqua feeds in mid-July this year, Geert van der Velden of Sonac explained that changing rules and regulations to accommodate the change would take some time and then the year long wait.

The most important amendment is the change to the TSE regulation to relax the feed ban for aquatic animals particularly the strict separation of the different processed animal a proteins (for porcine and avian meals can be mixed for fish feeding) 'from origin to final user', which is a key message.

Sonac's van der Velden says the reintroduction is "just in time for the next aquatic season."

"We are excited about this opportunity to see a very valuable protein source coming back into aquatic feeds."

Mr van der Velden says that rather than exporting large volumes of protein to third countries for use in pet foods, it's economically advantageous for this material to be utilised in Europe for the benefit of aquaculture.

Germany and France voted against the decision to reintroduce and the UK abstained. However, other member states were in agreement. In December 2012 the decision will be published in the EU's official journal.
