Florida aquaculture company comes second in business awards

A Florida-based aquaculture company has come second in a business award.  Barbara Wooden's Agape Marine Ventures (AMV) took second spot in the Miami Herald Business Plan Challenge Community Track.Now in their fourteenth year, the awards are designed to highlight entrepreneurial businesses in South Florida.

Ms Wooden's plan is reduce the pressures on overfishing by hatching cobia eggs in a hatchery before growing them to maturity in sea cages.  She estimates she will need $7.5 million, which will be matched by the government, and plans to finance her venture through both debt and equity investment.
Judges saw a strong market opportunity in her plan but there’s work to do in presenting the financials. One judge suggested starting with unit economics around one cage and building the financial plan up from that.
