Fish farming plan for South Africa

The South African government has put forward proposals for fish farms at two sites in Algoa Bay.  The operations, if they are approved, will consist of floating cages. According to a report in a local newspaper, the assessment process is still at a preliminary stage but the preferred sites look to be two off Deal Party – one of 285ha, 5km off the coast, and one of 517ha, another 2km further out.

The species that will be farmed have not yet been finalised but it is likely each site will focus on a combination of species suitable to the individual characteristics of each site, like depth and temperature.
The public have just three weeks left to comment on the plans put forward by government's Eastern Cape marine fish farming plans.  The public comment period closes on May 21. Anyone wishing to comment before then should write to Mackay at mel@cape-eaprac.co.za.
