Traditional fishermen against modern fish farmers

The islanders of the Islay have challenged the might of the corporate fish farming company, namely the Scottish Salmon Company, who wanted to install large salmon farms around the island coast. However the islanders are showing that they are a force to be reckoned with . They put up so much of a good fight that the Scottish Salmon Company have now shelved its plans to install these farms.

The Scottish salmon company now plans to forge ahead with its plans to install farms around the coast of Islay, and the islander are not going to give in without a fight. A petition quickly secured 800 signatures from the island. Willy Inglis, the factor of Islay Estates and one of the leading figures in Iasg (Gaelic for fish), the group set up to fight the Islay fish farms, told the Times this week:

“There is overwhelming opposition to fish farms on Islay. This is a fragile local economy which could be damaged hugely by this proposal. “We are against it but it is not nimbyism. This really will affect our economy. I believe it will be irreparable harm to Islay.” Read more ...
